The First Step To Recovery
... is admission. Exactly what Mr. Marshall Mathers executes on his new single "Not Afraid" for his upcoming (June 22nd) release, an album titled Recovery. At one point Em raps, "Let's be honest, that last Relapse CD was ehh", a statement not unfamiliar in the mouths of critics and fans alike since he dropped his last full-length album back in May 09.
Over a solid but uninspiring beat by Boi-1da, Em crafts 2010's emo-rap anthem. Minus the small portion of cringe-worthy singing, the verses are solid and I'm sure we can all appreciate the absence of any weird accents here. The chorus, although simple, should have grey hoodies bobbing up and down everywhere, people can't get enough of hooks like this, why do you think radio still plays "Beautiful" ?
I give it a general approval, but hopefully the whole album won't sound like this. I can only take so many rap songs that sound like they should be playing the background in an underdog sports movie.
